In mid-May, VVA National President John Rowan attended
the annual Indiana State Council Convention, where, among
other things, he visited the Richard Roudebush VA Medical
Center in Indianapolis. While there, Rowan took part in a
ceremony during which Indianapolis Chapter 295 presented
a huge check, in the amount of $22,500, to help underwrite
the 2008 National Veterans Golden Age Games, which will be
held in Indianapolis from August 20-24.
Every year, the Chapter
picks one worthy project to support through a series of raffles
of big-ticket items such as a Harley-Davison motorcycle,
as well as donations from the community. “We knew that
the VA needed help with the Games,” said Chapter board
member Bob Parsons, “and
we decided that this would be our 2008 big project.” The
Chapter has a good track record in raising funds. “What
helps a good deal is that we’re very active and visible
in the community,” Parsons said. “Among other
things, we do many high school programs and we help local
families whose loved ones are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.” The
people of Indianapolis responded to the Chapter’s community
service efforts, and the Chapter raised the funds in less
than a year.
The Veterans Golden Age Games is the premier
senior adaptive rehabilitation program in the nation. This
multi-event sports and recreational program is designed to
improve the quality of life for older veterans, including
those with disabilities. Military veterans age 55 or older
who receive health care at any VA medical facility are eligible
to compete.
