BY JUDY BOLIO, AVVA AWARDS CHAIR
At press time, we had no nominations for the 2007 Fellowship
Award. May 18 is the deadline to submit candidates. That
is only a matter of weeks.
In 2005 we had four recipients:
VVA Florida State Council and the AVVA Florida Association
for their work with Hurricane Katrina survivors, Joyce Koprowski
for her work organizing and helping with the hurricane, and
Dwayne Sogis for his everyday work with the homeless, seniors,
and children in California.
In 2006 we only had two recipients:
Kathy Upchurch, a Gold Star wife, for her work in Arizona;
and Jim Messmer, an incarcerated member from Ohio who is
committed to doing everything in his power to help his affiliated
chapter.
These are everyday people with everyday lives reaching
out to veterans and their families, the homeless, their communities,
states, and our nation. We want to recognize them and tell
them, “Thank you for a job well done.” But we
can’t if we don’t know who they are, what they
have done, or what they are doing. Please help us: nominate
them.
The requirements for nominations are:
- Applicant must be
a current member in good standing of AVVA with no pending
disciplinary actions.
- Applications must be postmarked no
later than May 18.
- Include a report, no less than one page
but no more than two pages, describing the individual’s
attributes and accomplishments.
- Include documents or articles
to reinforce the submission.
- The Awards Committee is responsible
for the selection. The award will be presented at the AVVA
Luncheon in Springfield. All submissions will remain the
sole property of the Awards Committee until the AVVA Leadership
Conference is closed, at which time they will be stored
at the national office in Silver Spring.
- Submissions should
be sent to Judy Bolio, Awards Committee Chair, 326-16th
Avenue, Silvis, Il 61282-1809 jbolio@avva.org
Please take the time
to acknowledge someone who goes a step beyond for their fellow
veterans, families, and country.
