Funk
U.S. Army Captain John T. Magnussen
served in Iraq with 20 HHC of the First Cavalry Division’s 2/227th
Aviation Regiment, flying the UH-60 Blackhawk. His unit was
stationed at Tahji, 10 miles north of Baghdad. Cpt. Magnussen
returned from Iraq in March and is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
His uncle, Len L. Funk, a past president of VVA Chapter 227, the
Dean K. Phillips Memorial Chapter in Northern Virginia, served 12
months as a U.S. Army adviser in the Plain of Reeds and an
additional 10 months in Go Cong Province as the Phoenix
Coordinator in 1969 and 1970. He returned to Vietnam in 1972 with
the State Department as a political officer in Tay Ninh and Binh
Duong Provinces where he served until December 1974.
