WOMEN VETERANS COMMITTEE REPORTThe Tenth Anniversary

As we moved from the Convention to the work at hand for the coming two years, the Women Veterans Committee began to focus on the events planned for Veterans Day 2003 and the tenth anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Womens Memorial. VVA was well represented in the many events that began the weekend before Veterans Day. Our work began over a year ago.
VVA began its presence with a tent on the Mall that included our membership initiatives, women veterans' displays, and AVVA information. We also had displays by the Gold Star Mothers, VA Center for Women Veterans, VA Women's Health Program Office, VA benefits, the Vet Center, the D.C. Office of Veterans Affairs, Vietnam Women Veterans, Circle of Sisters, and SDIT. We felt that inviting others with information pertinent to women and women veterans would be a great addition to our efforts because of the large number of women veterans who would be in Washington for the tenth anniversary.
The events included a Sunday service at the National City Christian Church at Thomas Circle "Remembering and Celebrating" the women who served; a luncheon on Monday at our anniversary home-base hotel; and a first-ever color guard Pass and Review of the Vietnam Women's Memorial.
On behalf of the Committee, I want to thank all those who helped with our efforts to represent VVA on this important occasion.
With the approval of committee membership, we will move forward with activity related to our resolutions, including our submission to the Government Affairs Committee for VVA's legislative agenda. In addition to our resolutions, two areas of interest are the structure and delivery of services in the VA Women's Clinics and Health Centers and the duties of the Women Veteran Program Managers.
As chair of the VA Advisory Committee on Women Veterans, I can report that this committee is currently working on its 2004 report to the Secretary. More will be coming on news of the 2004 VA Summit on Women Veterans to be held in June in Washington, D.C.
I want to thank President Tom Corey for my appointment as chair of the Women Veterans Committee. I will work over the next two years to earn your continued support in serving Vietnam Veterans of America and its membership.
