The Finance and Accounting Department
headed by Joe Sternburg, VVA Chief Financial Officer and VVAF Executive Director,
oversees all accounting functions for VVA, VVAF,
AVVA, and Veterans Collectibles. Joe, who
has a B.S. in accounting, served ten years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was with the Force
Logistics Command in Red Beach, Vietnam. He is a Certified Public Accountant with over 30
years' experience in for-profit and non-profit organizations and has over 15 years'
service in veterans service organizations.
The skilled team in the Financial and
Accounting Department includes Administrative Assistant Deborah Johnson, known as
"DJ" to
headquarters staff. Joe says she "does a fantastic job in assisting him with whatever tasks are
assigned her." DJ processes membership checks, VVAF grant applications, and Mike Nash
Scholarship applications. She records annual report submissions ffrom VVA state councils and
chapters and is the registrar for all VVA conferences and conventions. DJ also is the VVA
liaison for the Mike Nash Scholarship fund and assists with quarterly VVA board meetings.
Dana Crosse, Controller, has a B.S. in
accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant. She oversees all accounting functions and
works closely with Joe in preparing monthly financial statements, monitors and coordinates
budgets, and oversees annual outside audits.
Sutonta Thumprasert, CITP, has been
employed as the Staff Accountant since 1997. He reconciles all VVA and AVVA accounts,
assists the Controller with VVA and AVVA financial statements and budgets, codes and
reconciles reimbursement vouchers, and interacts with membership and Board members on status of
reimbursements.
Deborah K. Williams, Accounting Specialist
since 1996, processes account payables and receivables, rebates, and Household Goods
checks. She also prepares VVA staff payrolls and accounts payable for Veterans
Collectibles. Deborah was awarded the Chapel of Four Chaplains award in 2002. This award honors those who
have worked selflessly above and beyond what is required by their professional or
organization positions. Deborah is staff liasion for Veterans Against Drugs and mentors to the youth in
the community. She said, "Working at VVA has allowed me to grow in many areas, and I
thank VVA for a great learning experience."
Janis Isaac, VVA's Development Assistant,
monitors the VVA donor database and generates revenue reports. She processed 50,000
donations received by VVA in 2002 as a result of various appeals coordinated by VVA's consultant,
Mansfield Associates. She also ensures that all contributions are acknowledged and
thank-you notes sent to donors. Janis said, "VVA's membership is very supportive in all of
our appeals for donations." She also said, "Since I began working with the department in 2001,
the donor database has grown significantly, from 18,000 donors to
over 56,000 donors."
