The Official Voice of Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc. ® An organization chartered by the U.S. Congress September/October 2002 VETERANS INCARCERATED COMMITTEE REPORT       Successes In Tucson BY JOHN KOPROWSKI, CHAIR  The Veterans Incarcerated Committee put on two seminars at the National Leadership Conference in Tucson: "How to Be an Effective Veterans Incarcerated Liaison" and "Straight Up," the Missouri State Council transition program from institution to community life. The seminars were held on Saturday, the last day of the conference. Everyone was tired and ready to go home, but we were ready. As we were preparing, the room kept getting fuller. When we started, there were 27 conferees in attendance and ready to do business. The Liaison Manual for Veterans Incarcerated is just off the press after several rewrites. A special thanks to Adolph Gardner and his wife, Kaye, for all the hard work and time they devoted to this manual. They are true advocates. The manual, needless to say, is a big success. It gives the liaisons direction on how to do their jobs effectively. Ron Adams from Missouri gave an overview of the program that helps veterans in that state prepare for their transitions from institutional to community life. It is a great program that can be adopted easily anywhere. I want to thank Adolph Gardner, Ron Adams, and Allen Manuel for their help at the seminar. The White Paper, which was first published in 1998 by former Committee Chair Wayne Miller, has been revised. It will be published in a future edition of The VVA Veteran. The booklet Felon to Freedom  no longer will be available. The Committee decided that we could no longer publish a booklet covering all the rules and regulations in every state. Questions about programs in individual states will be referred to state councils or chapters in those states.
