VETERANS AGAINST DRUGS TASK FORCE REPORTPCP: It's Back And It's Deadly
BY HERB WORTHINGTON, CHAIR Remember the '60s and the '70s when PCP (phencyclidine) was around, and kids were taking it to get high? But then we found that PCP leads to violence, hallucinations, paranoia, and even suicide.
Believe it or not, PCP is back and in an even worse form than before. Kids are now smoking it mixed with embalming fluid. The street name for this concoction is ``Leak,'' and it's on the rise in urban America. Mint or tobacco leaves are soaked in the embalming fluid, then smoked. In other parts of the country it's known as Illie, Wet, Amp, Fry, Dust, and Love Boat.
It is estimated that 5-10 percent of all users of leak have violent reactions. All around the country, America's youth are trying this drug and paying the price for doing so.
Two young men were arrested recently for robbing a nutrition store while on leak. In addition to robbing the store, they repeatedly raped the store owner's daughter. The two men are suspects in a double murder in New York City. It is not uncommon for users of this drug to become explosive and violent for no apparent reason. Nationally, the use of this drug is on the upswing.
Our youth deserve better than this. We encourage you to join Veterans Against Drugs. You can make the difference in a child's life. See what a difference your time can make by spending it with kids who don't believe anyone cares. Whether in a boot camp, a school, or a detention center, kids across this country are in need of your caring.
Start a VAD program in your community. You will be glad you did.
